John Proctor is the Villain: The West End’s First Must-See Transfer of 2027
While the 2027 theatrical calendar is currently a collection of rumours and blank spaces, Kimberly Belflower’s John Proctor is the Villain has already stake its claim as the year’s most essential arrival. Following a record-breaking, sold-out success at the Royal Court, the production is confirmed for a strictly limited 12-week run at Wyndham’s Theatre starting this February.
As noted in our review of the Royal Court run, the play is an incredibly perceptive exploration of the messiness of real life. Set in a rural Georgia high school in 2018, it follows a group of students who begin to dissect Arthur Miller’s The Crucible just as the #MeToo movement starts to shake the foundations of their own community.
The brilliance of the piece lies in how it creates a grounded and lived-in authenticity. While it takes a moment for the classroom dynamics to settle, the wait is entirely worth it for a story that avoids caricatures. Instead, we see young people trying to find their footing in a shifting moral landscape. Directed by Danya Taymor, the production remains a pleasurable and insightful lesson in the power of empathy, building towards a conclusion that is as haunting as it is hopeful.
In a West End often dominated by safe revivals, this four star triumph offers a vital dialogue with theatrical history. If you missed the scramble for tickets at the Court, this 12-week engagement is the first major fixture of the 2027 season. Given that it previously sold out entirely, we recommend signing up for pre-sales and being ready the moment the virtual queue opens.
