Intermission Youth opens its next play, Julius Caesar Remixed, at the Omnibus in Clapham this November. Intermission Youth is a UK charity that uses drama, mentoring, and the works of William Shakespeare as vehicles for social change, aiming to transform the lives of disadvantaged young people.
Proving the concept works, many of its alumni are currently performing at the Marylebone Theatre until 24 October, in Tartuffe (Remixed) alongside Mark Rylance, a trustee since 2009.
Julius Caesar Remixed is a step on that route to success for the next cohort. The cast comes from this year’s Youth programme, and this is their first public performance. Six cohort members are also working backstage with the professional team. The circle closes at the top too, because the director, Stephanie Badaru, joined the charity’s first cohort in 2008. This year, she will be directing Julius Caesar Remixed, the first play she performed with Intermission Youth.
This adaptation of Julius Caesar updates the play with a very contemporary lens, setting the drama within a modern secondary school setting and exploring knife crime, postcode rivalries, and real-life tragedies.
Darren Raymond’s script mixes iambic pentameter with contemporary slang. He explains, “Shakespeare didn’t write for elite audiences, his language was the raw street vernacular of his day. When you listen to the incredible rhythm, wordplay and lyrical sharpness used by today’s youth, the poetic cadence matches the Elizabethans perfectly. This remix isn’t about diluting the text, it’s about unlocking its raw power.
“Through the lens of Shakespeare’s story of ambition, loyalty, and betrayal, Julius Caesar Remixed asks us to look beyond the headlines. We need to better understand the pressures shaping the lives and choices of this generation, and look at how families, schools, and communities can help navigate our young people towards a more hopeful, fruitful future.”
Director Badaru says, “Stepping into the director’s chair for the second time to guide this talented fledgling cast through this new production is incredibly special. The energy they will bring blurs the lines between ancient Rome and modern street culture, challenging the audience to look closely at the cycles of power.”
