Our book group are Kate Atkinson fans so this book was a popular choice. It provided a solidly satisfying read and a real glimpse into some of the headier excesses of 1920s London nightlife.
The story rings true, perhaps in part because it is based on the life of real life nightclub queen, Kate Meyrick. A hugely colourful character, who also inspired the character Ma Mayfield in Evelyn Waugh’s novel, Brideshead Revisited, she provides rich pickings for an adventure-filled and slightly murky novel.
