Bleak expectations **, Criterion Theatre

Bleak Expectations, by Mark Evans, is based on the award-winning BBC Comedy. It is a pastiche of Dickens and, having seen the incredible Pride & Prejudice (sort of) at the same venue, we had high hopes.

Unfortunately, Bleak Expectations does not live up to its promise. The cast are very talented with Shane David-Joseph as a ghost a particular highlight. Each week has a different star narrator and Robert Lindsay was tremendous. However the story is weak and the jokes are not funny or clever enough to sustain the audience, there were very few laugh-out-loud moments.

The overall feeling is all the inanity of a pantomime with none of the fun costumes or celebrity dames, a pity.

Bleak Expectations runs until 3 September at Criterion Theatre.
