The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein is well-known in the US, but deserves to be better known here as well. In a well-told, cumulative story, children begin to learn the impacts of greed. I have read this with primary children all the way to Year Six and all have been horrified at the end.
It is a great source material for discussions about greed and gratitude. It could also sit alongside discussions about deforestation and looking after our world’s resources.
